Bioscience Authority launches internship

pairing students with early-stage startups

After a pilot cohort, state public-private partnership New Mexico Bioscience Authority announced April 7 it is launching an internship program to help statewide bioscience startup companies.

The program pairs and sends bioscience and business students to early-stage startups across New Mexico, helping jumpstart their business operations as well as research and development.

The Authority sent its Bioscience Entrepreneurship Experience’s pilot cohort to the following startup companies statewide:

  • Algae Analytics & Algae Aura — Truth or Consequences
  • Inward Direction — Jemez
  • LifeScience Testing & Analysis — Albuquerque
  • Mesa Alta Research — Albuquerque
  • NeuroGeneces — Santa Fe
  • Prosperous Research Systems — Albuquerque
  • Tramway Ventures — Albuquerque

This internship ends May 15.

The spring cohort included 13 interns from four state institutions: the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech and Central New Mexico Community College.

“The goal of the BEE is to support the growth of New Mexico’s bioscience industry while opening doors to a new sector for our workforce,” said Stephanie Tofighi, executive director of the New Mexico Bioscience Authority. “By investing in local talent, we’re strengthening the ecosystem and creating opportunities that keep people here.”

Drew Tulchin, NM Angels investment group president, said the internship offers a “real concrete way” to help bring talent to places that need them the most.

“The biggest place where there’s a talent gap is (at) businesses that aren’t close to a lot of people,” Tulchin said. “They don’t know where to find or recruit folks. So, not only does this provide the interns with learning and a stipend, but our collective hope is this also will lead to hires.”
